San Pedro Sula, also known as the Industrial Capital of Honduras, is located in the Northern zone of the country, some 50 kilometers from the coast and in the middle of the fertile Sula Valley, important agroindustrial center and where most of of the industry, manufacturing, and commerce of Honduras is found.
Due to its geographical location, and because it has an excellent international airport, San Pedro Sula is a frequent stopping place for turists who visit the Northern area of Honduras, the wonderful Bay Islands (a true diving paradise), and the world famous Copan Ruins, representative of the magical and misterious Mayan culture.
At the same time, San Pedro Sula is at the heart of the Honduran maquila zone, which is found mainly in the cities of Choloma, Villanueva, La Lima, Búfalo, and El Progreso, all of them less than 30 minute drive from San Pedro Sula.
West of San Pedro Sula you find the Merendón mountain range, lung of the city and its main source of water. The Merendón is a natural reserve of unparalel beauty, crowned by the Cusuco National Park, one of the most important and beautiful of the country.
The city itself is belted by the Circunvalación, a boulevard where you find some of the finest stores, supermarkets and restaurants of the city, as well as several shopping centers (including the new and modern City Mall), and many fast food outlets. San Pedro Sula is sectioned by two main ways: First Street, which crosses the city from East to West, and Third Avenue (also called Calle del Comercio, or Commerce Street) which crosses the city from North to South. At the intersection of these two main ways you find Central Park and the Metropolitan Cathedral, simbols and landmarks of the city.
Along First Street (which in its Western side is a boulevard, called Boulevar Morazán) you can find businesses of every kind: From modern discoteques, such as Mantra´s, to shopping malls like Nova Prisa. You can also find a variety of hotels, banks, restaurants, and boutiques, as well as the Francisco Morazán soccer stadium.
The Business District runs along Third Avenue, or Commerce Street, and the streets parallel to it. That is where you can find most of the stores, shops, and wholesalers of the city.
In the South-Western quadrant of the city, and towards Circunvalación, you find the Zona Viva, which contains most of the restaurants, discoteques, karaokes (very popular in the city), and bars of San Pedro Sula, and it is a must for visitors who want to learn a little bit about how the Sampedranos have fun.
For shopping, locals and visitors prefer the city´s modern shopping centers: The City Mall, Multiplaza, and Nova Prisa, as well as the Guamilito Artisan Market, where you can find all sorts of handicraft shops, representative of the different geographical areas of the country.
